Once again controversy has erupted in the world of late night
television. Some of you might remember the late night wars of the early 90s. Jay Leno was a key player in that drama.
Today he again finds himself at the center of a new controversy. As you may already know, Jay Leno wanted to star in a new
show that aired at 10pm, well before the traditional Tonight Show time slot. Why 10pm? We believe shows like "The
Daily Show" and Stephen Colbert had made this time slot relevant with a younger, hipper crowd of viewers. Jay
Leno wanted a piece of this lucrative audience. He also wanted to be the star of the show. No longer would everything be about
the Tonight Show franchise, no longer would he be compared to previous hosts. Now the show was entirely about him. Jay wanted
to be bigger than the Tonight Show. Unfortunately for Jay, the viewing public did not agree. Ratings for the new show were
abysmal. NBC quickly went into panic mode.
In a bizarre
move, NBC has decided to push Jay's new show back to the 11:30 time slot. They also plan to move
The Tonight Show to 12:05 am, pushing it past the midnight hour. This is a move that outraged many long time fans of the show.
To make matters worse, the current host of the Tonight Show, Conan O'Brien, has publicly stated he wants nothing to do with
the new schedule. Many people feel the noble O'Brien is being screwed in a very public manner. The talented and dedicated O'Brien
has crafted a well loved program over his many years on the network. He has developed a loyal following that patiently waited
to see him make the move up to the big seat on the Tonight Show. After all this is a right of passage for a late night
talk show host. David Letterman found a home at CBS and Jay Leno took his job from the beloved Johnny Carson.
It should also be noted that Jay Leno was once accused of pushing Johnny Carson out of
the Tonight Show. Allegedly he was tired of waiting and felt entitled to the position after many long years
as a guest host. While its true that Jay certainly paid his dues as a guest host, there are many people who would have liked
to have seen Johnny stick around a little while longer.
This
controversy leaves us with a lot of unanswered question. Is Jay Leno bigger than the Tonight Show? Is Conan O'Brian being
screwed by NBC? And finally, should Jay Leno retire? Should Jay do the honorable thing and step down from his current position?
By doing so he would protect the integrity of NBC and the reputation of The Tonight Show franchise. He would also be passing
the torch to a man who well deserves the honor. Please vote in our poll and tell us what you think. Since the
people at NBC can't seem to make up their minds, hopefuly the voice of people will have some positive effect on their
final decision.
